Large-scale displays have been a common sight at sporting venues for decades. However, when it comes to the cutting-edge video walls gracing today’s esports and sports arenas, Absen is playing a totally different ball game.
Tim Deasy, senior sales engineer, and Nick Wilson, industry development director for sports and DOOH at Absen recently sat down with AV Technology’s Cindy Davis to discuss the growing role of video walls in esports and sports, effective strategies for working with teams and venues, critical technology considerations for space design, and the cutting-edge Absen products leveling up arenas nationwide.
Like the in-person attendees at a pro basketball game, fans at esports events are invested in the performance of their favorite players and want to feel like they’re a part of something. But in esports, the number of people watching via online streaming platforms can be an order of magnitude larger than those who choose to show up to a physical venue—making it absolutely critical to select video walls that bring a real “wow” factor and keep fans coming back.
“We are nerds, at the end of the day,” Deasy said. “We want the latest, greatest, and best of things. At home, we've spent $1,000, $2,000, or $3,000 on just the computer setup. So to get us to come out to these events, it's got to be something really grand—something that looks great.”
And beyond mere aesthetics, products such as Absen’s popular MR Series are designed for durability in high-traffic environments. These displays can withstand approximately 2,000 pounds per square meter—strong enough to hold a car—making them extremely well-suited to live esports and sports settings. Both Deasy and Wilson agree that floor-mounted video walls are one of the most exciting trends in the industry.
“The floor solution is unique in the sports industry—not just esports,” Wilson said. “There are features there that maybe haven't been thought about: How can we use it in concourses? Everyone's looking down—at least I do. When I'm walking around airports and concourses, I'm usually on my phone or looking down. And so the floor might be a good sponsorship idea.”
But while significant in-person foot traffic is both an important technological consideration and an opportunity to get creative with video wall content, a more advanced camera setup may still be necessary to properly capture and stream the live excitement to remote audiences.
“You have cameras being pointed at the screens to be able to see live audiences or for live audiences to see online,” Deasy said. “The ability to shoot something with a camera requires an upgrade in technology from the norm. You typically have an LED or something, but if you shoot it without technology that supports it—it's not going to work. You're going to see a bunch of lines all over the screen and a bunch of colors being distorted. It's going to be a mess.”
