Participation in this “Rental & Staging Top 40” list was entirely voluntary: We did not try to independently size up the market and rank companies based on third-party analysis. The companies that appear on the list chose to respond to our online survey, and all the information provided was taken on good faith.
Also, note that sales and other financial numbers are sensitive, and any company is justifiably hesitant to divulge exact sales numbers. So we chose, after consulting with many staging companies, to rank the companies in broad revenue categories so as not to divulge specifics.
The top revenue category was “Over $150 million” (annual revenue), and the fact that there are just a couple of companies in that class says a lot about the industry. Specifically, for both companies reporting greater than $150 million annual revenue, pure “staging” or “AV rental” revenue is but a part of their overall revenue.
The next largest group, with $30-149 million in annual revenue, are indeed companies that get pretty much all that cash flow from staging and AV rental.
The biggest group responding to the voluntary online Top 40 ranking survey had revenue below $5 million. This year, this is not just due to historical trends favoring small-footprint companies. As Tom Stimson points out, recessions are great time to start a new business because good talent is less expensive and customers are more willing to make a change. And new businesses are small businesses. As encouragement, we’ve tacked on a few more companies in this level, making the actual list 43 companies, but “Top 40” sounds much better than “Top 43,” so we’re sticking with that.
It’s very interesting to look at the information in the survey responses regarding freelance employees used by staging companies. Are the most successful staging companies relying on permanent staff and (ostensibly) the better, more predictable technical and management skills they bring to the show, or are they paring down in a recession and relying on more freelancers?
